In our last post, we mentioned that BuyBrevard.com is built on a culture of partnership. It’s important to understand what that means if you want to really dig into what BuyBrevard.com is all about. There are a lot of so-called buy local programs in and around the county, and each of them claim to have the interests of the community in mind. The problem is that so few of them actually come to the table with real value for the people doing business in Brevard!

What sets BuyBrevard.com apart in this area is our commitment to every part of the buy-local process. Partnership really means involving all interested parties and maximizing their interests in the process. We want BuyBrevard.com to maintain a culture of partnership and that means making sure that every step in the buy-local program maximizes the value for all parties involved.

We see important partnership relationships with three major groups in the BuyBrevard.com program.

1. Local Business

Doing business locally takes commitment. It means focusing on what’s good for the people who live and work in their own neighborhood, not necessarily looking to the greater reach of a national opportunity. The BuyBrevard.com program is built on a culture of partnership. We have partnered with The Gall Group, Inc., founded and owned by Michael Gall, to sponsor weekly networking groups that provide valuable referral opportunities and important business education. All of these groups, currently three every month, are free to registrants, include a light breakfast, and never fail to provide value and profitable relationships. There are three groups currently, located in all parts of the county. The La Cita Networking Breakfast takes place at La Cita Country Club on the fourth Thursday of every month. Recession. Downturn. Depression. These are words we’ve heard often over the last couple of years. The harsh reality is that our nation and our community are facing some of the most difficult economic conditions that our generation has ever seen. Some pundits prefer to stick to this doom and gloom message and decry the political decisions that may or may not have gotten us here. But within any cloud there can be found a silver lining, and a concerted effort by local residents to support Brevard businesses may prove to be just that for the Space Coast.

We are privileged to live in a community that is built on a foundation of strong locally owned and operated businesses. These companies employ local workers, pay local taxes, and utilize local resources. Whether you realize it or not, the Space Coast is fortunate to have such a community. There are cities and towns around this country that are not nearly so lucky. Many rely on foreign businesses, chain retailers, and corporate employment to keep their local economy running and relevant. The problem that will always exist in these situations is the lack of community ties that these organizations maintain. They are often not tied to the people or to the local economy, and when conditions such as we are seeing now prevail they may leave those communities if it befits their financial needs.

Dollars & Sense

So, it would seem that we should have success where others are finding difficulty, should it not? Yet, even in our county, local businesses continue to struggle against national chain retailers and online shopping sites that take local money and use it to pay workers in other cities and countries who, in turn, spend it in places other than Brevard County. Chris Coneen, owner of the Pizza Gallery & Grill, understands the necessity of local businesses: “I absolutely love and appreciate the ‘Buy Local’ campaigns. I think the common sense of the concept is often overlooked or sometimes forgotten. When I buy local, I am supporting my community. Being an independent restaurateur, I appreciate and respect those who support us, so we in turn put ALL of our physical and financial means right back into our community and local economy.”

Maintaining a thriving local economy is a two-way street; keeping the economy of the Space Coast growing and prosperous is (or should be) the mission of everyone living here. As long as local companies are committed to providing value and service to the residents (and visitors) of Brevard County, our citizens need to be committed to patronizing those businesses and showing their support by spending locally before taking our money outside of the county or even the state.

In LivingEconomies.com’s recent article about the need for local-first buying, they cited a 2003 case study of Maine communities, and how local dollars were used by the businesses that received them. The results showed that 45 percent of the local business revenue was spent in the surrounding two counties, while another 9 percent was invested elsewhere in the state. If our local businesses are keeping over half of their revenue inside the local economy, our financial longevity has very optimistic potential. But the success of that concept is fully reliant on local consumers buying from local retailers and businesses.

Buy Brevard

The “Buy Brevard” campaign was recently kicked off by a consortium of concerned local businesses – led by Space Coast Credit Union and Health First Health Plans – that understand the economic implications of keeping commerce within the community. The campaign’s official website, BuyBrevard.com, was the first step in converting a “feel good” concept into a legitimate business tool and a nonprofit organization whose sole focus is promoting local businesses.

Combining the broad reach and power of an integrated media platform that includes print, video, Internet and social media, “Buy Brevard” provides local companies with a place to highlight their products and services in front of the eyes and ears of people living and working in Brevard County. For example, many local business owners have videotaped interviews running on BuyBrevard’s YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/user/BuyBrevard), which are also highlighted on the nonprofit’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/buybrevard). In addition, BuyBrevard.com offers an exciting “Deal of the Day,” in which consumers can save up to 50 percent on gift cards at local restaurants, salons and other retailers. These promotions not only reward current users, but lower the risk barriers to entice new customer trial.

Everyone’s Opportunity & Everyone’s Responsibility Many local business owners concur, “There isn’t a person who lives or works on the Space Coast who shouldn’t be involved and invested in BuyBrevard.” Buena Vida Estates, a continuing care facility in Melbourne, is a great example. They are invested and engaged in the BuyBrevard program, and their staff, from top to bottom, believes in the concept. Doreen Boudreau, the marketing director at Buena Vida, stated, “Buena Vida Estates supports BuyBrevard because it is important to support local business-to-business.”

Another local company, Marketing World Specialties, Inc., is a supporter of the program. “As a business owner in Brevard County for over 21 years and a resident for over 25 years, I strongly believe in supporting other Brevard County businesses and giving back to the community we call home.
